2. MIA Park and the Museum of Islamic Art

A short walk from the Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and its surrounding park sit on a small peninsula jutting into Doha Bay. The I.M. Pei-designed building is one of the most architecturally distinctive museums in the region.

If you have time to go inside, the collection spans 1,400 years of Islamic art from three continents — manuscripts, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, and metalwork from Spain to Central Asia. Admission is free.

Even without going inside, MIA Park is worth the walk. The shaded promenade around the Dhow Harbour is one of the most pleasant walks in Doha. Traditional wooden dhow boats sit moored in the water. West Bay's skyline of glass towers glitters across the bay. At sunset, the light here is extraordinary.

The terrace viewpoint just inside the MIA entrance is one of the most photographed spots in Qatar. Benches on the park side of the building face directly across the harbour — sit here for 20 minutes and watch the city change colour as the light drops.

At night, the West Bay towers illuminate in shifting patterns and colours. This is worth coming back to after dark if your layover spans both day and night.
