Essential Things to Know Before You Go
- Currency: The Qatari Riyal (QAR). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, but carry some cash for the smaller souk vendors. Using a low-fee card like Wise or Revolut avoids international transaction charges.
- Language: Arabic is the official language. English is widely spoken throughout the city, in shops, restaurants, and at the airport.
- Dress code: Casual western clothing including shorts and t-shirts is fine in most areas. Shoulders and knees covered is advisable when entering mosques or government buildings. Swimwear is appropriate only at hotel pools or private beaches, not public beaches or the Corniche.
- Alcohol: Not available publicly. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and specific venues but is not sold in shops or at the airport duty-free for consumption before departure in the usual sense. If you are used to an airport beer, you won't find one here.
- LGBTQ+ visitors: Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. This is a real legal risk, not just a cultural note. Avoid using apps like Grindr. Book separate rooms if travelling as a same-sex couple and the relationship would be visible.
- Ramadan: If your layover falls during Ramadan, most restaurants in the city close during daylight hours and eating or drinking in public is strongly discouraged. The airport restaurants remain open throughout. Iftar (the breaking of fast at sunset) is a wonderful thing to witness on the Corniche if your timing allows — the atmosphere is genuinely special.
- Things close on Friday mornings: The metro, the souk, and MIA are typically closed or run reduced hours Friday morning. Qatar's weekend is Friday and Saturday.
- Heat: From May to September, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. If you are visiting in summer, plan outdoor time for early morning or after sunset and prioritise air-conditioned venues in the middle of the day.
