This is the single best use of layover time in Doha. The Souq Waqif is a labyrinth of narrow covered alleyways, traditional architecture, spice vendors, antique shops, carpet dealers, art galleries, jewellers and — crucially — some of the best food in the city.

Unlike the sanitised souks found in some Gulf cities, this one still buzzes with locals. It does not feel like a theme park version of a Middle Eastern market. Real Qatar sits in these alleyways — families out for the evening, men in thobes arguing over the price of dates, the smell of cardamom and oud drifting through the covered sections.

Eat here. The choices range from cheap Yemeni foul and flatbread in small worker-run spots to upmarket Qatari restaurants with shaded terraces overlooking the crowds. For a proper meal under QAR 40, go deep into the alleyways away from the main tourist-facing strip.

The Falcon Souq is also attached to this area — Qatar's falconry culture is serious, and watching the handlers and buyers examine birds is a fascinating window into Qatari tradition.

Allow at least 2 hours. You could happily spend a full day here.

Getting there: Metro to Al Matar / HIA station, then Red Line to Souq Waqif station. Around 25 minutes, QAR 2–3.
