Qatar's National Biodiversity Database: What the 2026 Numbers Show

Plant 50 Trees – The Tree Gift

In April 2026, Qatar's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announced the completion of its National Biodiversity Database. The database documents 2,567 species recorded across the country through years of systematic scientific monitoring.

The breakdown is striking. The database includes 1,027 terrestrial plant species, 390 bird species, 36 mammal species, 42 reptile species, 59 fish species, and 524 invertebrate species.

These numbers confirm what field researchers have long known. Qatar's ecological diversity concentrates in coastal and marine habitats rather than the interior desert. The Gulf coastline, seagrass beds, and offshore waters carry a disproportionate share of the country's wildlife richness.

The database now functions as a strategic decision-support tool for conservation planning. It allows authorities to track species status over time, identify emerging threats, and measure the impact of conservation interventions. It is also central to Qatar's commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and its alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
