Al Thakira Mangroves, north of Doha, represent Qatar's largest natural mangrove system. The dominant species is Avicennia marina, the grey mangrove. It is entirely salt-tolerant, lives in seawater along sheltered coasts, and thrives in the same hyper-arid conditions that make terrestrial vegetation sparse elsewhere.

Qatar has been propagating mangroves along its coasts since 1982. These are not decorative plantings. Mangroves function as nursery habitat for juvenile fish and crustaceans, as roosting and feeding sites for coastal birds, and as buffers against erosion and storm surge.

Al Thakira is accessible by kayak. Paddling through the mangrove channels in early morning is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences available in Qatar. Herons, egrets, kingfishers, black-winged stilts, and grey and purple herons move through the canopy.
