Tripoli, November 01, 2026 : Head of Libya's Presidential Council Mohammed Al Menfi has welcomed the UN Security Council's decision to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for another 12 months, calling for an inclusive, Libyan-led political process to end the transitional period and pave the way for free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a statement, Al Menfi said the resolution reaffirmed Libya's sovereignty, national unity and the frameworks governing its political process. He also praised UNSMIL's role in facilitating dialogue and mediation, highlighting progress made through the mini-track initiative and its preliminary outcomes.
He stressed the need to expand political consensus and ensure the participation of all relevant institutions, warning against appointing representatives on their behalf or limiting the political process to a small group of parties.
Al Menfi cautioned that agreements reached without broad national consensus would not provide the foundation for a lasting political settlement.
He also welcomed the Security Council's emphasis on unifying state institutions and its rejection of unilateral actions that could deepen divisions. He commended the condemnation of attacks against civilian facilities and populated areas, as well as calls for investigations and accountability.
Al Menfi reiterated that a sustainable political settlement requires a comprehensive national process involving all political forces, aimed at unifying state institutions and bringing the transitional period to an end through consensus, legitimacy and respect for the will of the Libyan people.
The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2835 on Friday, extending UNSMIL's mandate for 12 months. Thirteen of the Council's 15 members voted in favour of the resolution.
