Sand Cat — The Desert's Most Secretive Predator
The sand cat is the smallest wild cat in the world. It is also one of the hardest to see.
This compact predator weighs between one and a half and three and a half kilograms. Its paws are covered in long fur that protects them from hot sand and allows it to walk silently across loose desert surfaces. Its large ears pick up the movement of underground prey. Its buff-coloured coat disappears against desert gravel. It hunts almost entirely at night.
Sand cats live in Qatar's interior desert, sometimes occupying abandoned fox dens. They eat rodents, small birds, lizards, and insects. They can survive without drinking water for weeks, extracting all their moisture from prey.
Sightings in Qatar are rare. Camera traps placed in protected desert areas provide most records. The sand cat represents the category of Qatar wildlife that rewards patience and the willingness to look carefully at an apparently empty landscape.
