NHRC Commemorates Arab Human Rights Day

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in cooperation with the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI), held a symposium entitled "The Right to a Healthy, Sound and Sustainable Environment in the State of Qatar."

The organization of this symposium comes within the framework of the celebration of the NHRC and the DI of the Arab Human Rights Day, followed by a series of events and activities aimed at shedding light on the extent to which the right to a healthy, sound and sustainable environment is protected in the State of Qatar, in addition to evaluating national efforts in this field, to identify the most prominent challenges and the best practices that would lead to the full realization of this right.

In his opening speech, Deputy Chairman of the NHRC Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari indicated that today's symposium was one of the fruits of cooperation between the NHRC and the DI and that it came within the celebration of the Arab Human Rights Day and an affirmation that human rights were at the core of the Arab-Islamic culture that we were proud of. He added Human Rights were not a foreign or imported concept in our societies, pointing out that human rights constituted one of the main things that enable the Arab person to advance his reality for the better in accordance with the requirements of noble human values.

For his part, President of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies Dr. Abdul Wahab Al Affendi praised the environmental policy in the State of Qatar and said it encouraged interest in human rights on the one hand and environment on the other, which was an old concern and had well-established roots, stressing that the focus on environmental human rights must be the concern of everyone.

The symposium concluded with reviewing the efforts of governmental, national, and non-governmental agencies and companies in the State of Qatar in the field of protecting the right to a healthy environment and highlighting the most important successes and challenges facing its protection.
