The body of Indian marine engineer Heramb Karmarkar, who went missing after his vessel was attacked off Omanâs coast, has been recovered, a seafarersâ union confirmed Wednesday.
Karmarkar, 30, from Pune, had been unaccounted for since Sundayâs strike on the Cypriotâflagged GFS Galaxy. Manoj Yadav of the Forward Seamenâs Union of India said the Omani coast guard located his body nearly 60 hours after the incident. âThe company informed me Tuesday evening that Herambâs remains had been found,â Yadav told AFP.
The attack disabled the shipâs engine room and left it burning, according to US Central Command, which accused Tehran of responsibility. While Karmarkar perished, the other 23 crew members including 10 Indians  were rescued.
Indiaâs foreign ministry condemned the assault, urging an end to attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf. The incident comes amid escalating hostilities, with Iran announcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and launching missiles and drones at neighboring states in retaliation for US strikes.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20 percent of global oil shipments passed before the war erupted on February 28, remains a flashpoint in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
