Moringa โ often called the โmiracle treeโ โ has become a favourite in natural beauty routines, and for good reason. Its leaf powder is packed with antioxidants that help fight free radicals, along with vitamins and amino acids that support the skin barrier and the scalp. It is inexpensive, easy to store and blends into masks, scrubs and rinses in minutes. Here are eight ways to put it to work at home.
For the skin
1. Brightening face mask
Mix: one teaspoon of moringa powder with one tablespoon of plain yogurt (or honey for dry skin).
Use: apply to clean skin, leave for 15โ20 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. The antioxidants and lactic acid in yogurt help even out tone and add a natural glow.
2. Gentle exfoliating scrub
Mix: one teaspoon of moringa powder with one teaspoon of oats and a little honey or water to form a paste.
Use: massage in soft circular motions for a minute, then rinse. It lifts away dead skin without the harshness of gritty scrubs.
3. Soothing anti-blemish spot treatment
Mix: a pinch of moringa powder with a few drops of rosewater into a thick paste.
Use: dab onto blemishes, leave for 10โ15 minutes and rinse. Its anti-inflammatory compounds may help calm redness.
4. Hydrating moringa face mist
Mix: half a teaspoon of moringa powder into a small bottle of rosewater or cooled green tea; shake well before each use.
Use: spritz over clean skin as a refreshing, antioxidant-rich toner. Store in the fridge and use within a few days.
For the hair
5. Strengthening hair mask
Mix: two tablespoons of moringa powder with enough water or aloe vera gel to make a spreadable paste.
Use: apply from roots to tips, leave for 20โ30 minutes, then wash out. The amino acids and vitamins help nourish strands and support healthier growth.
6. Scalp-soothing oil blend
Mix: one tablespoon of moringa powder warmed gently into two to three tablespoons of coconut or olive oil, then cooled and strained.
Use: massage into the scalp, leave for an hour (or overnight), and shampoo out. A good pre-wash treatment for a dry, flaky scalp.
7. Anti-dandruff rinse
Mix: one teaspoon of moringa powder steeped in a cup of warm water, then strained and cooled.
Use: pour over the scalp as a final rinse after shampooing. Its antimicrobial properties may help keep flakes in check.
8. Shine-boosting conditioner add-in
Mix: half a teaspoon of moringa powder into your usual dollop of conditioner.
Use: apply to the lengths, leave for a few minutes and rinse for a quick antioxidant and shine boost on wash day.
A few tips before you start
Always patch-test first: apply a small amount to your inner forearm and wait 24 hours to rule out irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. Use fresh mixtures rather than storing them for long, keep water-based blends refrigerated and use them within a few days, and avoid the eye area. Moringa can complement a good skincare and haircare routine, but it is not a cure for acne, eczema, dandruff or hair loss ย for persistent concerns, see a dermatologist.
