The Khareef: Arabia's Only Monsoon Season

Nothing defines Salalah more than the Khareef, the annual monsoon season that sweeps through from late June to early September. While the rest of the Gulf bakes in summer heat, Salalah cools dramatically, with temperatures hovering between 20°C and 27°C. Mist rolls over the mountains, waterfalls cascade down jagged cliffs, and the surrounding hills transform from brown to vivid emerald green.
"Khareef" simply means "autumn" in Arabic, but in Salalah it has taken on a meaning all its own: a time of fog, drizzle, renewal, and celebration. The city fills with visitors from across Oman and the wider Gulf region who come to experience the rare sight of a lush, green Arabia. Markets, food festivals, and cultural events animate the streets throughout the season.
Wadi Darbat is the crown jewel of the Khareef experience, a breath-taking valley that fills with water, its lakes swelling enough to allow boat rides through a landscape that would not look out of place in the Scottish Highlands.
