What Is Eid Al-Adha? A Brief Context

For residents who may be newer to Qatar or to Islamic observances, a quick note on why this holiday matters.
Eid Al-Adha — also called the Feast of Sacrifice — is one of the two most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Hijri calendar, and marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage season. It commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, and the divine intervention that replaced the sacrifice with an animal.
In Qatar and across the Gulf region, Eid Al-Adha is observed with communal prayers, family gatherings, the sacrifice of livestock (Qurbani), and the distribution of meat to those in need. It is a public holiday across all GCC countries, and Qatar's official schedule reflects the importance of the occasion at every level of society and employment.
