How Did Libraries Begin in Morocco?
![]()
Morocco's earliest libraries grew around mosques. That pattern goes back to the founding of Fez in the late 8th century CE.
The Idrisid dynasty established Fez around the end of the 2nd century AH / 8th century CE. Two grand mosques anchored the new city: the Qarawiyyin Mosque and the Andalusian Mosque.
Around these mosques, scholars and state officials built libraries. They hosted intellectual gatherings and debates. They drew inspiration from Abbasid Baghdad and Umayyad Cordoba. Kings hired scribes to copy books. They stocked collections in theology, philosophy, medicine, engineering, and literature.
Libraries were not just storage rooms. They were active centers of learning.
