Qatar University (QU) has taken a significant stride towards a more sustainable future by joining the esteemed network of universities committed to fostering a positive impact on the environment.

This global initiative, launched in Dec. 2022 by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in partnership with the University of Oxford, aims to galvanize higher education institutions worldwide towards a greener future.

QU's decision to align itself with the network of universities with a positive impact on nature underscores its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. The university's pledge extends across all facets of its operations, ranging from academics and scientific research to administrative processes and supply chains. The core objective of this initiative is to reverse the alarming trend of biodiversity decline while preserving the vital environmental systems intertwined with the higher education sector's activities. By becoming a part of this prestigious network, QU is taking a decisive step to amplify its contributions to the protection and enhancement of the natural world.

Regarding to that, QU has demonstrated proactive engagement in the national climate change action plan. The institution has already implemented several impactful initiatives and programs aimed at fostering a more nature-positive environment on its campus.

One of the standout initiatives is the "Zero Waste" plan, which strives to reduce waste on campus by adopting the principles of the circular economy.

This initiative includes the recycling of paper, plastic materials, single-use items, and food waste, making it a comprehensive strategy to minimize environmental impact.

Moreover, the university has embraced renewable energy policies and conservation measures to reduce its carbon footprint. Designating natural habitats within the campus provides a sanctuary for local wildlife, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. The "Together for a Greener Future" campaign has garnered widespread support, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in creating a sustainable tomorrow. A particularly noteworthy endeavor is the "Living Lab Doha." This groundbreaking project seeks to expand effective food production on campus while simultaneously conserving water and energy resources. It serves as a beacon of innovation in sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, reinforcing QU's commitment to a greener future.

By joining this network, QU has joined a prestigious group of 135 universities spanning 50 countries, all dedicated to taking meaningful actions that promote a more nature-positive world.

The commitments made by these universities are based on four main pillars: assessing the current state of biodiversity on the university campus and its facilities; setting specific, measurable, and time-bound goals for nature; implementing bold actions to reduce negative impacts on biodiversity, protect, and restore species and environmental systems; and preparing annual reports to track progress and ensure accountability.
