Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) announced that over 2.1 million passengers utilized the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks during the AFC 2023 Asian Cup, which took place from January 12 to 21, 2024.

Qatar Rail, on X platform, stated that their networks transported a total of 2,164,211 passengers from the start of the AFC Asian Cup until the conclusion of the second round. Among these, 2,086,162 passengers opted for the Doha Metro, while 78,049 passengers chose the Lusail Tram. The announcement extended a warm welcome to fans of the Asian Cup 2023 aboard their networks.

The most crowded stations during this timeframe included Msheireb, Lusail QNB, and DECC. The metro facilitated connections to significant event locations and attractions like Souq Waqif, Lusail Boulevard, Katara, and Al Bidda Park, the venue for the Expo 2023 Doha Exhibition, with direct links to Al Bidda and Corniche stations on the Red Line.

Rashid Al Shafi, the Government Affairs & Stakeholder Director at Qatar Rail, emphasized the cooperation with government entities to guarantee security preparedness for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 tournament.
“Security is a top priority and a key pillar in our operation. Therefore, we work diligently with our partners and relevant entities to ensure the safety and security of all passengers across our networks throughout the Qatar 2023 Asian Cup. We are committed to providing a secure travel experience for the fans and visitors,” said Al Shafi.

Ahmed Abdelmajed, a Railway Systems Engineer, outlined Qatar Rail's strategy for signalling systems in the railway network and the enhancements made to ensure operational quality and the highest levels of reliability during the Championship.

“We have made several updates and upgrades to the systems by improving the system efficiency to assist the operator and provide more automated functions during normal operation and in case of any malfunction in the operation process,” said Abdelmajed.

For this tournament, Qatar Rail deployed the complete fleet of 110 contemporary, comfortable, and secure Doha Metro trains.
