Iran and New Zealand Share Points After Draw in FIFA World Cup 2026

Iran and New Zealand players battle for possession during their pulsating 2-2 draw at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles. FIFA World Cup 2026, Group G, Matchday 1.

Group G basically rolled out its first real slice of World Cup drama on Monday , with Iran and New Zealand serving up this pulsating 2-2 draw at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. It was one of those matches that swung twice, really pressed both sides to the edge, and wellโ€ฆ in the end it rewarded neither team with a clean winning start for their 2026 run, kind of unfair if you think about it.

Honestly it was the sort of opener that reminds you why the group stage is so special. Two evenly matched sides, four goals, and a scoreline that keeps everything wide open as Matchday 2 waits around the corner.

New Zealand Strike Early ย
The All Whites set the tone almost immediately. They pushed up high, squeezed Iran into awkward moments at the back and forced errors that were not easy to manage. Then came the reward, in the seventh minute, when Elijah Just arrived at the right moment on a Chris Wood assist to fire New Zealand ahead. It was a calm, composed finish, very much the kind of thing you see from someone who is not intimidated by the biggest stage โ€” and it had New Zealand fans inside SoFi Stadium basically losing it.

Iran didnโ€™t fold though, credit where itโ€™s due. The Carlos Queiroz-coached group took the early hit and then slowly found their footing , growing into the match. They started to build possession and hunted for those openings where their final-third quality is supposed to show up.

Iran Level Before Half Time ย
That steadiness paid off in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian drew Iran level with a smart equaliser, the kind that steadies nerves in an instant. Once the goal landed, the rhythm shifted. After that, both teams went in for the break level, and really, everything still remained on the table.

The first half itself felt competitive and physical, also technically neat for long stretches, like a loud reminder that both nations turned up fully ready for the World Cup, and tactically organised enough to survive the pressure.

Just Strikes Again โ€” Then Iran Hit Back
The second half produced the most dramatic passages of play. New Zealand came out with renewed purpose and Just was at the centre of it again, scoring his second goal of the match in the 54th minute to put the All Whites back in front. Two goals in one World Cup game for the young attacker โ€” it was a coming of age performance on the grandest stage.
But Iran refused to fold. In what was becoming a genuinely absorbing contest, Mohammad Mohebi stepped up to restore parity in the 64th minute, levelling at 2-2 with a clinical finish that brought the Iranian supporters to their feet.
From that point, both sides pushed for a winner that never came. The final whistle confirmed a share of the spoils โ€” a result that felt fair given the way the game ebbed and flowed throughout.

Group G Standings After Matchday 1
With the draw confirmed, both Iran and New Zealand open their accounts with one point each. The full Group G standings after the opening round of fixtures are as follows:

Iran โ€” 1 pt (GD 0)
New Zealand โ€” 1 pt (GD 0)

What Happens Next
For Iran, the draw will be seen as a solid starting point, but Queiroz will know his side need a win in Matchday 2 to keep their knockout stage ambitions alive. Conceding twice โ€” particularly allowing New Zealand to retake the lead โ€” will be a concern going forward.
New Zealand will be quietly encouraged. Elijah Just announced himself as one of the tournament's early standout performers, and the All Whites showed they have the tactical discipline and attacking threat to cause problems for any side in this group.
Group G is wide open. Not a single team can afford to drop their guard now.ย
