Hamad Port climbs to eighth globally in container port index

Hamad Port has advanced three places to secure eighth position worldwide and second among Gulf ports in the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), published jointly by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence. The ranking cements its reputation as one of the most efficient maritime gateways globally, achieved during a period of mounting disruption across international shipping lanes.

The CPPI is widely regarded as the leading benchmark for container‑port efficiency, measuring vessel turnaround times, berth productivity, and cargo‑handling speed. Hamad Port’s rise reflects its ability to sustain high performance despite geopolitical tensions, supply‑chain shocks, and congestion affecting many of the world’s busiest ports.

Officials attributed the achievement to sustained investment in infrastructure, digitalisation, and operational excellence. Since its inauguration, Hamad Port has become the backbone of Qatar’s trade strategy, handling more than 95 percent of the country’s seaborne imports. With an annual capacity of 7.5 million TEUs, the port accommodates some of the world’s largest container vessels and processes a wide range of cargo, from food and construction materials to vehicles and industrial equipment.

Recent indicators show faster vessel turnaround and quicker cargo clearance, reducing costs for shipping lines and strengthening Qatar’s supply‑chain competitiveness. Advanced port‑management systems, automation, and integrated customs platforms have streamlined operations, aligning with Qatar’s broader push toward smart‑port technology.

The ranking also underscores Hamad Port’s resilience amid global uncertainty. While many ports struggle with delays and rising costs, Hamad Port has maintained reliability, reinforcing confidence among international shipping companies. Beyond logistics, the port supports Qatar’s economic diversification agenda, facilitating trade, attracting investment, and enabling industrial growth.

Its ascent to eighth globally signals Qatar’s expanding role in shaping regional and international trade flows, positioning Hamad Port as a cornerstone of global maritime connectivity.
