Ophthalmology Services Significantly Improve Access to Care by Introducing More Clinics

The Ophthalmology Department in the Ambulatory Care Center, part of Hamad Medical Corporation, has introduced over 20 new weekly clinics as part of its commitment to ensuring timely access to care for patients.

“By adding 21 new clinics per week, we have increased the number of patients visiting our clinics by more than 20% per week. We saw an average of 1,130 patients per week before the new clinics; now we see more than 1,370 patients per week,” says Dr. Omar Al Qahtani, Head of Ophthalmology.

He explains that the clinic timing was also changed by starting 30 minutes earlier than before thus increasing the outpatient slots given to patients. In addition, he says evening ophthalmology diagnostic clinics will be extended to help minimize the patient waiting and maintain a steady flow of patients in the clinic and in a timely manner. “With the reduced outpatient department waiting time for new patients, we intend to increase our capacity to meet future demand and ensure all patients are seen in a timely manner,” Dr. Al Qahtani highlights.

The Ophthalmology Department in ACC offers tertiary ophthalmology care in the country within state-of-the-art-diagnostic clinics and operating rooms. The Ophthalmology subspecialties are the highlights of the departmental service provision which is competitive with the world-class ophthalmic centers that are not available in other hospitals in the country.

“We have the most modern technology for diagnostic ophthalmology and the tertiary ophthalmic care which is not available in other hospitals in the country. These include corneal transplantation, glaucoma surgeries, complicated vitreo-retinal surgeries, significant number of emergency traumatic cases, combined anterior and posterior segment complicated surgeries, and more,” Dr. Al Qahtani adds.
