The two-day 50th Regular Session of Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights has kicked off today in the General-Secretariat of Arab League Headquarters in Cairo with the participation of the state of Qatar.

HE Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Turki bin Abdulla Al Mahmoud led the state of Qatar's delegation to the meeting.

The agenda of the session includes a broad range of themes covering permanent items, foremost of which being Israeli violations and racial acts in the occupied Arab lands, ways to handle the problem of Arab prisoners and detainees in Israeli prisons, in addition to the bodies of the Palestinian martyrs and Arabs detained in the prisons of the occupation authorities.

During her inaugural remarks delivered to the session, the Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Social Affairs Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh emphasized the importance of the strenuous efforts at the level of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights to support the Arab Human Rights System, coordinate the positions on human rights issues that have been rolled out regionally and internationally with the prime Arab issue coming at the forefront, including the Palestinian cause at top priority.

She stressed the need for concerted efforts to enshrine these rights in their various dimensions and levels, calling for more coordination and cooperation between the four existing mechanisms under the umbrella of the Arab human rights system, particularly the Permanent Arab Human Rights Committee - the key committee, the Arab Charter Committee on Human Rights, and the Committee on Human Rights, Human Rights in the Arab Parliament, and the annual conference of those responsible for human rights in the Arab Ministries of Interior, while respecting the scope of their respective jurisdictions, adding that coherence of efforts has become very essential.

Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh stressed the importance of not isolating the work of the Permanent Arab Human Rights Committee from the contribution provided by national human rights institutions and civil society organizations, pointing out that interaction with all stakeholders would add a distinct dimension to the work of the Committee during the coming period.
