Ukrainian Authorities: 1 Killed, 20 Injured in Russian Attack on Kherson

KHERSON — One person was killed and 20 others were injured in Russian attacks on the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and surrounding areas, Ukrainian authorities said, in the latest in a near-daily pattern of strikes on the region's civilian areas.

Regional officials said Russian forces struck residential neighbourhoods as well as critical and social infrastructure, damaging homes, vehicles, and civilian facilities. Those injured were taken to hospital, with medical teams treating blast injuries, shrapnel wounds, and concussion, the typical pattern of injuries recorded in drone and artillery strikes on the city.

A City Under Constant Bombardment

Kherson and the settlements along the west bank of the Dnipro River endure daily Russian attacks, with Moscow's forces maintaining control of the river's east bank. The city and its surrounding areas were liberated during Ukraine's autumn 2022 counteroffensive but have remained under frequent bombardment ever since.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, has reported a sustained tempo of assaults, with Russian forces striking Kherson city alongside dozens of other settlements across the region in a single 24-hour period. Attacks are typically carried out using various types of drones, mortars, artillery, and guided aerial bombs.

Civilians Bearing the Brunt

The casualties form part of a heavy toll on the region's civilian population throughout July. Earlier in the month, Ukrainian authorities reported multiple days on which several people were killed and dozens injured across the Kherson region, with children among the wounded in a number of incidents. Drone strikes have repeatedly targeted vehicles, public transport, shops, and road junctions in the regional capital.

Among the facilities struck in recent weeks were a filling station, a municipal transport depot, an educational facility, and residential buildings, according to the Kherson City Military Administration and regional police. Following intensified strikes with guided aerial bombs, residents of Kherson have begun leaving the most dangerous parts of the city and relocating to relatively safer neighbourhoods.

War Crimes Investigations

Ukrainian law enforcement officials have launched pre-trial investigations into the attacks under statutes covering war crimes. Prosecutors, working alongside investigators, are documenting the consequences of the strikes on civilian areas as part of the ongoing effort to record and build cases arising from the Russian offensive.
