U.S. sees regional energy projects as part of stronger Syria strategy

The United States is focused on supporting the development of a stable, unified and economically viable Syria, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday, expressing support for regional energy projects including the proposed Kirkuk-Baniyas oil pipeline.
The official said Washington believes Syria's long-term stability depends on strengthening state institutions, improving economic conditions and encouraging regional integration after years of conflict.

As part of that effort, the United States supports initiatives that could boost Syria's economy and deepen cooperation with neighboring countries, including the revival of the Kirkuk-Baniyas oil pipeline linking Iraq's northern Kirkuk oilfields with Syria's Mediterranean port of Baniyas.

The pipeline, which has been out of operation for decades due to conflict and political tensions, has been discussed as a potential route to expand Iraq's oil export capacity while helping Syria rebuild its energy infrastructure.
The U.S. official stressed that any such project would need to comply with applicable legal and regulatory frameworks and be implemented in a manner that promotes regional stability and economic development.
Washington has increasingly emphasized economic recovery and regional connectivity as key elements of its broader approach toward Syria, while continuing to support efforts aimed at preventing a resurgence of extremist groups and encouraging political reconciliation.

The comments come amid renewed discussions among regional governments over infrastructure projects that could improve trade and energy links across the Middle East.

The United States has said it remains committed to working with partners in the region to support a secure, stable and prosperous Syria integrated into the broader regional economy.
