Five ways to freshen your home
1. Stovetop simmer
Simmer peels in a pot of water with spices you like—cinnamon, cloves, star anise, ginger, or a sprig of rosemary. Steam carries the citrus through the house; kitchens and living areas benefit most. Keep water topped up and never leave an unattended pot on high heat.
2. DIY potpourri
Mix dried peels with cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, dried lavender, or other dried flowers in a bowl or jar. Place it on a shelf, bedside table, or near the entrance. Refresh with orange oil when the aroma softens.
3. Simple room spray
Boil peels in water, strain, and cool. Add about 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol or a few drops of vodka to help the mix disperse when sprayed. Optional: a little orange essential oil. Store in the fridge and use within about a week.
4. Wardrobe and drawer sachets
Put fully dried peel pieces in muslin or cotton bags. Tuck them into wardrobes, drawers, shoe racks, or linen cupboards to soften musty, closed-in smells.
5. Bins, sinks, disposals—and the vacuum
- Fresh or dried peels in the bottom of a bin or down the disposal can help with food odours (replace peels regularly in bins).
- A few small, completely dry peel pieces in the vacuum bag or canister can release a light citrus note while you clean—only use dry pieces to avoid moisture in the machine.
