5. Khor Al Adaid (The Inland Sea) — Qatar's Most Extraordinary Natural Landscape

Best for: Adventure seekers, nature lovers, photographers, bucket-list experiences
Location: Southeast Qatar, near the Saudi Arabian border

There is nowhere quite like Khor Al Adaid anywhere in the world. This is a UNESCO-recognised natural reserve where towering sand dunes — some rising to 40 metres — descend directly into a saltwater tidal inlet connected to the Arabian Gulf. The landscape is geologically extraordinary and visually unlike anything else you will encounter on the Arabian Peninsula.

The wildlife alone justifies the trip. The tidal lake is home to fish, crustaceans, sea turtles, and bird species including flamingos. Bring a grill, bring your camera, and go at sunrise or sunset when the light turns the dunes gold and amber. Currents can be strong in places, so exercise appropriate caution when swimming.

Getting here requires a 4WD — the dune crossing to reach the water's edge is part of the adventure. Many visitors join organised desert tours that include dune bashing, sandboarding, and a BBQ dinner by the water.

Insider tip: This is a full-day (or overnight camping) experience. Don't attempt it without a 4x4 and plenty of water.
