Set in a cotton-farming village in Sudan, "Cotton Queen" follows teenage Nafisa as she stands at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, torn between a marriage proposal and her own awakening sense of power. Directed by Qatar-based filmmaker Suzannah Mirghani, this tender, politically charged coming-of-age tale weaves themes of identity, matriarchy, and resistance into a richly textured story of women's resilience. Filmed after the outbreak of war in Sudan and recreated in Egypt with Sudanese refugees, the production itself mirrors the film's own themes of displacement and creative endurance, a poignant cinematic ode to strength and self-determination.
