Room for Cautious Hope
Despite the new risk classification, conservationists say the situation isn't without hope. Lawrence emphasized that while the desert rain frog is now at risk of extinction, it remains far from being lost entirely, and stressed the importance of ensuring that once mining activity in the region concludes, the affected habitat can be restored to a condition where the frog can once again thrive there. The species' rarity, researchers add, only makes each sighting more meaningful. As one scientist put it, finding one of always exciting, precisely because they're so rare, and so distinct, unmistakably cute.
