The Unwritten Rules: How to Shop Like a Local
Arrive early: The very best fish, the morning catch, goes to those who show up at dawn. Most serious shoppers are at the market by 6-7 am.
Bring cash: Most fish stalls are cash-only, though larger markets like Umm Salal have ATMs nearby.
Don't be shy about the cutting service: Once you've puchased your fish, head to the fish cleaning and cutting area it's available for a small fee depending on the number and type of fish. Ask for your fish scaled, gutted and cut into steaks or fillets. They do it in minutes.
Smell before you buy: Fresh fish smells like the sea, not "fishy" Trust your nose, eyes should be clear and bright, flesh firm to the touch.
Haggling is welcome: Especially if you're buying in bulk. A polite smile and "shukran" go a long way.
