The Comeback of Y2K Fashion

The Comeback of Y2K Fashion By Abinaya Rajagopal - April 29, 2024
The comeback of nineties to two thousands fashion

Hold onto your bedazzled belts, folks, because the early 2000s are clawing their way back into our wardrobes faster than you can say bootcut jeans.

Yes, you heard it right. The infamous Y2K fashion is staging a comeback, and it's about as welcome as a surprise visit from your ex.

Let’s take a walk up on the catwalk of the past, shall we?

Low-rise jeans

Because apparently, the fashion industry collectively decided that what the world really needs is more midriff exposure. Forget about comfort or practicality, these denim disasters are here to remind you that muffin tops are a thing, and they're making a comeback too.

With every step, your jeans threaten to reveal more than just your sense of style, creating a never-ending battle against the dreaded phenomenon known as "muffin top".  It's like a game of fashion roulette, where the odds are never in your favour.

Bedazzled Everything

Prepare your retinas for a blinding display of rhinestones, sequins, and glitter, because bedazzled everything is back in style.

From rhinestones to sequins to glitter galore, bedazzled everything is making a comeback, and it's about as subtle as a disco ball in a dark room.

Shirts, pants, jackets, phone covers, accessories, nothing is safe from the bling brigade's clutches. It's like a bedazzlement explosion went off in the fashion world, leaving a trail of sequins and shattered retinas in its wake.

Lip Gloss

Finally, an actual Y2K beauty trend to be excited about. Though the frosted lip gloss era does remind us of all of the countless makeup mishaps, the gloss is back on trend again, but this time with a dash of tint added.

The tinted lip gloss is taking the beauty industry by storm and it looks like they're here to stay.

With big brands like NYX, Rare Beauty, Fenty and more coming out with their own versions of the juicy gloss, everywhere you go you’ll see lips with a luscious plump look to it.

Tiny Sunglasses

And let's not forget everyone's favourite ocular assault: tiny sunglasses, the eyewear equivalent of a toothpick. Because why protect your eyes from harmful UV rays when you can squint your way through life like you just stepped off the set of The Matrix?

With lenses the size of postage stamps, these ocular abominations offer about as much protection from the sun as a paper umbrella in a hurricane.

Ballet Flats

The dainty, delicate shoes of ballerinas are back on the fashion scene, and we’re all for this comfort comeback.

For too long now have the high stilettos and combat boots been in reign. With soles thinner than a piece of tissue paper, these comfort slides are finally back.

Who doesn’t want to look like you're ready to audition for Swan Lake.

Mini Skirts

Hold onto your hemlines, because mini skirts are back and well.

The barely-there bottoms of the early 2000s are back on the fashion radar, leaving us all wondering if we've accidentally stumbled into a time warp back to the era of questionable hemlines.

Velour Suits

Brace yourselves, the plush, pyjama-like ensembles of the early 2000s are making a triumphant return to the fashion scene.

With fabric so soft it could double as a blanket, this loungewear will leave you feeling more fabulous and comfy. Due to the easy factor of these suits, you'll find yourself in a great mood all throughout the day.

So why, you may ask, are we subjecting ourselves to this blast from the past?

Perhaps it's nostalgia for a time when flip phones were considered cutting-edge technology and boy bands ruled the airwaves.

Or maybe it's just a lack of imagination on the part of designers who have run out of ideas and are now raiding the early 2000s for inspiration.

But as it is here now, might as well embrace the trends as they are here to stay for a good while.
