Ryan Reynolds Teases Next Deadpool Film Could Explore Comic Book "Deep Cuts"

Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that another Deadpool movie will eventually happen, and hinted that the next film could explore lesser-known characters and stories from the character's comic book history. The actor and producer made the comments during a panel at Fanatics Fest in New York over the weekend, offering fans the strongest signal yet that the Merc with a Mouth will return to the big screen.

"There's a few really deep cuts that I think are missing from the movies. I think a few deep cuts are missing from some of the comics," Reynolds told the audience. "There's certainly some stuff that I love that Fabian wrote that is incredible, and Gerry Duggan, another friend and incredible comic writer, that we can put in. But then there's stuff upcoming. There's eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. So it's going to be great."

Drawing on the Comics

Reynolds specifically highlighted the work of Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza and acclaimed comic writer Gerry Duggan as sources of inspiration for the character's future on screen. His comments suggest that the next instalment could lean heavily into the character's extensive print history, adapting storylines and figures that have yet to appear in the films, rather than repeating familiar beats from the existing trilogy.

According to Deadline, the film is currently in early development, with no writer or director attached at this time. Reynolds stopped short of confirming whether the project would be branded Deadpool 4 or whether the character would first return in another Marvel film, and no plot details or production timeline have been revealed.

Following a Box-Office Juggernaut

The comments come after the enormous success of 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, which reunited Reynolds' antihero with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and grossed almost $1.5 billion worldwide, shattering box-office records for an R-rated film. That success made another outing feel inevitable, even as Reynolds spent months teasing and talking around the character's future. The franchise launched with 2016's Deadpool and continued with 2018's Deadpool 2 before the 2024 team-up became one of Marvel's biggest hits.

A Supporting Player, Not a Solo Lead

Interestingly, while Reynolds has begun writing ideas for the character's return, he has suggested that Deadpool may not headline future stories. "I have some stuff kind of written, but I don't think I am ever going to centre him again," he said during an appearance on Sunday Today earlier this year. "He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group." The remarks point to a possible ensemble project rather than a traditional solo entry.

Reynolds has also addressed persistent rumours linking Deadpool to Marvel's upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, currently scheduled for December 2026. While speculation continues, he has been firm that the character works best on the outside. "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end," he told Time. "Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated."
