Qatar's Prime Minister hosted India's top diplomat in Doha on Sunday. The meeting covered trade, energy, and regional security.

What happened

HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, according to a statement from Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Jaishankar was visiting the country as part of a wider Gulf tour.

The two ministers discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, particularly in the economic field. They also reviewed regional developments and how these affect global energy markets and the broader economy.

Both sides stressed the need to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means. They said this approach supports security and stability at both the regional and international level. The two ministers also agreed to keep building cooperation through joint working mechanisms and bilateral committees.

The wider context

Sunday's meeting marked the first stop on Jaishankar's tour across Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, running from July 5 to July 10. He will later travel to New York to launch India's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028 to 2029 term. The tour then concludes in Brussels with the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting.

Jaishankar described the Doha meeting as productive in a post on social media. He thanked Qatari leadership for protecting the welfare of the Indian community living in the country. He said the two sides reviewed cooperation across energy, trade, investments, connectivity, and security.

Qatar remains one of India's key energy partners. India imports roughly 8.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas from Qatar each year, and long-term supply contracts between the two countries are approaching renegotiation. Energy security featured prominently in Sunday's talks for that reason.

India and Qatar upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership last year, during a state visit by Qatar's Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, to India in February. Sunday's meeting builds on that upgraded partnership and points toward closer coordination ahead.

Jaishankar also acknowledged Qatar's role in mediating the ongoing US-Iran negotiations. He said he appreciated Doha's assessment of how the West Asia conflict is affecting the wider region. Qatar has long played a mediating role in regional disputes, including past involvement in talks over Gaza.

What comes next

Both governments plan to activate joint working mechanisms and bilateral committees in the coming months. These bodies typically handle the technical details of trade, investment, and energy agreements between the two countries.

Jaishankar's Gulf tour continues through Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman over the following days. Each stop is expected to focus on similar themes of energy cooperation, trade expansion, and support for Indian communities working across the region.
