Qatar introduces 18‑month notice policy for private school fee increases

The Peninsula reported on 11 June 2026 that the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has unveiled the first edition of the School Fees Policy 2026, a landmark regulation for private schools and kindergartens. The new framework requires institutions to provide parents with an 18‑month advance notice before implementing any tuition fee increases.

The announcement was made during a press conference held in Doha, where officials highlighted the policy’s role in safeguarding families from sudden financial burdens. According to The Peninsula, Dr. Rania Mohammed, Director of the Private Schools and Kindergarten Department and Acting Director of the Private School Licensing Department, explained that the measure introduces a grace period unprecedented in Qatar’s private education sector.

“For the first time in private education, parents will have a grace period of one and a half years from the time the fee increase is approved,” Dr. Rania was quoted as saying. She added that the extended notice allows families to reorganize their finances or consider transferring their children to another school, while also giving students time to psychologically prepare for potential changes.

The Peninsula further reported that the Ministry will evaluate fee increase requests based on several criteria, including inflation rates, financial performance, and academic achievements of schools. Dr. Rania emphasized that this approach is designed to enhance competitiveness among private institutions and encourage them to raise academic standards.

The School Fees Policy 2026 represents a significant step in Qatar’s efforts to balance educational quality with affordability, ensuring that parents are better informed and empowered in making decisions about their children’s education.
