Qatar's Ministry of Defence confirmed on Friday, July 17, that its armed forces intercepted several air attacks targeting the country. The announcement came as the region's escalating conflict pulled Qatar deeper into danger.
The ministry shared the news through short posts on its official X account. It first announced that forces had intercepted a missile attack. A follow-up post said troops intercepted several more aerial attacks. It added that forces were still responding to ongoing threats. Residents in Doha reported hearing multiple loud explosions during the operations.
Child Hurt by Shrapnel
Qatar's Ministry of Interior confirmed that a child suffered a shrapnel injury during the attacks. The child is currently receiving medical treatment. Civil Defence teams activated their approved emergency response plans right away. Officials also urged residents to avoid touching any unidentified debris found nearby.
Qatar raised its national security threat level twice on Friday morning. The Ministry of Interior issued alerts around 3:30 am and again near 5:45 am. Both alerts told residents to seek shelter immediately. People were told to stay indoors and away from windows. Officials also warned against standing near glass facades or open outdoor spaces until the threat passed.
Part of a Growing Pattern
Friday's attacks were not an isolated event. Qatar faced a similar assault on July 12. That day, the Defence Ministry reported intercepting a separate round of ballistic missile attacks. Authorities briefly raised the threat level again before declaring the situation under control. Qatar blamed Iran for those attacks. Officials said the strikes also hit other Arab nations. Qatar called the attacks a clear violation of its sovereignty and international law.
The latest wave followed a major move by the United States. A day earlier, US Central Command struck several targets inside Iran. Those strikes hit command centres, air defence sites, and missile facilities near the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar has played a key role as a mediator throughout the conflict. Yet it came under attack for the second time this week, according to international reports.
Escalation Spreads Across the Gulf
Qatar was not alone in facing new attacks on Friday. Kuwait's Armed Forces said its air defences intercepted several missile and drone attacks. The military reported detecting and destroying 32 hostile drones since early Thursday. These drones had entered Kuwaiti airspace without authorization.
Bahrain also came under threat on Friday. Warning sirens sounded there for the second time that morning. Bahrain hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet. Iranian state media reported that Iran's military targeted US assets stationed in the country.
Qatar had already condemned Iran's repeated attacks earlier in the week. Officials criticized the strikes hitting Arab nations across the Gulf and wider Middle East. Several international allies have echoed this criticism. They have voiced concern over the conflict spreading into Gulf states not directly involved in the fighting between the United States and Iran.
