During the 27th session of the ALECSO General Conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar was elected Vice-Chairman of the Executive Council of the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) for the 2024-2026 term.

H.E. Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education and Chairperson of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science (QNCECS), led Qatar's delegation. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), the Ministry of Culture, Qatar University, and QNCECS.

The three-day session covered a range of topics related to ALECSO’s performance and future plans. Key agenda items included reviewing suggestions, following up on important decisions, establishing an Arab observatory center, discussing the first session report of the ALECSO Business and Partnership Forum for 2024, and developing the forum’s draft strategy.

The session also focused on supporting the Arab Week of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), an initiative to highlight Arab culture and civilization, promote intercultural dialogue, and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Arab countries.

Additionally, the session approved a response plan to address educational, cultural, and scientific challenges in member countries facing conflict, crises, disasters, and emergencies. This plan includes assessing the needs and damages in affected countries and allocating part of ALECSO’s budget for necessary activities, while mobilizing partners and donors.

In the election results, Qatar was elected Vice-Chairman of the Executive Council by a majority of votes, while Saudi Arabia was re-elected as Chairman for another term. Ali Abdulrazzaq Al Marafi, Acting Secretary-General of the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science, will represent Qatar in this role.

Al Marafi emphasized that Qatar’s election underscores its commitment to regional and global cooperation, aiming to build a better future for the region and future generations. He looks forward to contributing to ALECSO’s strategic objectives, fostering partnerships among member states, and initiating projects and programs that support its mission.

ALESCO seeks to promote intellectual unity among Arab countries through education and science, enhance human resources in the Arab region by improving educational systems, and spread Arabic and Islamic culture.
