DOHA - The State of Qatar issued a strong condemnation on Tuesday of an attack targeting two UAE oil tankers as they transited the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a serious violation of the safety of international navigation and a direct threat to global energy supplies.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Doha described the assault as a clear breach of international law, warning that the continuation of such attacks constitutes a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and undermines ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability across the Gulf.
The Ministry renewed Qatar's call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately halt any actions that jeopardize regional security, urging Tehran to refrain from endangering the safety of international shipping lanes and global energy supplies that pass through the strategic waterway. Doha further demanded that Iran fully comply with international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, and take urgent, concrete measures to prevent similar attacks from recurring.
The statement is the latest in a series of condemnations from Gulf states following a string of incidents targeting commercial and energy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which roughly a fifth of global oil and gas supplies typically transit. The strait has seen repeated attacks and heightened threat levels in recent months amid strained US-Iran relations, prompting mediation efforts by regional powers including Qatar.
Qatar has positioned itself as a key mediator in de-escalation efforts between Washington and Tehran, and its foreign ministry has previously summoned Iranian diplomats over similar incidents involving vessels linked to Qatar and other Gulf states.
