After President Rodrigo Duterte requested for the extension of martial law in Mindanao for another year, party mate under PDP-Laban Senator Manny Pacquiao on Monday said he is in favor of the President’s request.

Pacquiao, who is also a Mindanaoan, said his fellowmen in Mindanao feel safer with martial law in place.

“Taga-General Santos ako, wala namang problema. Mas masaya nga kami sa martial law ng Mindanao dahil safe kami, nakakalabas kami, naglalakad kami nang wala kaming bodyguard,” the Senator said in an interview, as disclosed in a story by GMA News.

[I am from General Santos, and there seem to be no problem at all. We are happier with martial law in place in Mindanao because we are safer; we can go out, we can go around without bodyguards.]

He added that the one-year extension doesn’t seem too long, and that there have been no reports about military abuse in Mindanao since military rule was imposed in the area as a result of the attack in Marawi City by the Maute terrorist group.

Duterte asked the Congress through a formal letter to extend martial law in Mindanao until December 31, 2018. As granted by the 1987 Constitution, the Congress has the power to decide if there is a need to revoke or extend the martial law declaration of the President.

It could be recalled that on July 22, the Congress, in a special session, approved Duterte’s request to extend martial law in Mindanao until December 31 of this year.

Duterte initially declared a 60-day martial law in Mindanao on May 23 following the attack on Marawi City.

To justify his request, President Duterte identified threats from ISIS-inspired groups and “communist terrorists”.

He pointed that the martial law administrator and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana deemed it necessary to have a year extension of martial law to “ensure total eradication of the DAESH-inpsired Da’awatul Islamiyah Waliyatul Masriq, other like-minded local and foreign terror groups and armed lawless groups, the communist terrorists and their coddlers, supporters, and financiers.”
