Doha, Qatar: Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and the Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ) have inaugurated the Umm Al Houl 3 primary substation, marking a major step in supplying reliable power to Qatar’s free zones.

The launch highlights the strong partnership between both entities in advancing national power infrastructure and improving energy stability across key economic zones.

The new 132/11 kV substation, with a capacity of 80 MVA, will significantly boost grid reliability and ensure a stable electricity supply to meet the rising energy needs of investors in sectors including logistics, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Located in Al Wakra, it also supports Qatar’s broader transmission network serving major industrial and service areas.

Developed under a 2021 Memorandum of Understanding between QFZ and Kahramaa, the project reinforces their joint efforts to enhance Qatar’s investment climate with modern, sustainable infrastructure that supports expanding business activities across the free zones.

Umm Al Houl 3 Substation improves the efficiency and stability of Qatar’s electricity transmission network while expanding capacity to accommodate future urban and industrial growth. Equipped with advanced digital monitoring and protection systems, it strengthens grid resilience, minimizes outages, and aligns with high environmental standards to reduce emissions in support of Kahramaa’s sustainability goals.

Ahmed Nasser Al-Naser, Director of Kahramaa’s Technical Affairs Sector, said: “The inauguration of the Umm Al Houl 3 Substation reflects Kahramaa’s strategy to lead the electricity and water sector through innovative projects that ensure service continuity and operational excellence. This facility supports the needs of Qatar’s growing economic and service sectors and underscores our commitment to sustainable infrastructure in line with national development plans.”

Eng. Abdulla Al-Rewaily, Acting Chief Zones Development at QFZ, added: “This substation is a major milestone in the development of Umm Alhoul Free Zone as a hub for advanced industry and maritime operations. Reliable, future-ready infrastructure is central to QFZ’s mission to create a globally competitive environment for business growth and innovation. Our collaboration with Kahramaa demonstrates the strength of national partnerships in driving sustainable development and advancing Qatar National Vision 2030.”
