Sheikh Tamim continues receiving condolences from regional and international leaders following the death of Qatar's Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Doha, according to The Peninsula Qatar, as part of the continuing wave of condolence visits to Lusail Palace following the death of Qatar's Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, on July 12.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had already conveyed his condolences shortly after Sheikh Hamad's death was announced, saying he received the news with deep sorrow and extending his sincere sympathies to Sheikh Tamim, his family, and the people of Qatar.

Part of a Wave of Visiting Leaders

The meeting comes amid an extensive procession of foreign leaders traveling to Doha this week to pay their respects in person. Sheikh Tamim has separately received Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accompanied by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar , Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, among other regional dignitaries. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was also expected in Doha to attend the funeral and offer condolences on behalf of Uzbekistan, while the Maldivian President and the Prime Minister of Libya's Government of National Unity have likewise arrived to pay their respects.

A Central Asian Relationship

The meeting reflects Qatar's engagement with Kazakhstan and the wider Central Asian region, where Doha has increasingly sought to deepen diplomatic and economic ties in recent years. Kazakhstan and Qatar have maintained regular high-level contact, including a previous meeting between Sheikh Tamim and Kazakhstan's outgoing ambassador to Doha, Arman Issagaliyev, in late June, during which Sheikh Tamim awarded the Al Wajbah Decoration in recognition of his role in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Qatar's Mourning Period Continues

Qatar's Amiri Diwan has declared four days of national mourning following Sheikh Hamad's death, suspending government work and lowering flags to half-mast nationwide, with civil servants expected to resume duties on July 19. Sheikh Tamim is continuing to receive visiting heads of state, dignitaries, and citizens at Lusail Palace, with condolence receptions expected to continue over the coming days as more foreign leaders and royal representatives from the Gulf, the wider Arab world, and beyond travel to Qatar to pay their respects.

Sheikh Hamad's Legacy

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until his voluntary abdication in 2013, when he handed power to Sheikh Tamim in one of the rare peaceful transitions among hereditary Gulf rulers. He is widely credited as the principal architect of modern Qatar, having overseen the expansion of the country's liquefied natural gas industry, the 1996 launch of Al Jazeera, the establishment of the Qatar Investment Authority, and Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
