Washington, October 4, 2026 :Β Google plans to scale back free access to its Gemini artificial intelligence service, days after launching its new Gemini 4 Argon model.

The company said free personal accounts not subscribed to a Google AI plan will lose access to the Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro models, with their use limited to Flash-Lite β€” a significant reduction from the level of service previously available at no cost. Unsubscribed users previously had access to all three models before Google decided to restrict free use to Flash-Lite alone.

The changes also affect Google AI Plus subscribers, who will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash but lose access to the Pro model. Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, by contrast, will continue to have access to all three models. Google said AI Plus subscribers will be notified by email of when the changes take effect on their accounts.

In a related move, the company said its Deep Think feature will now be made available to Google AI Pro subscribers, in addition to Google AI Ultra subscribers, who previously had exclusive access. The feature, which Google describes as designed to maximize parallel inference, allows complex tasks to be handled using advanced reasoning capabilities.

Under the new structure, Google AI Pro subscribers will have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro models, along with the Deep Think feature, while Google AI Ultra subscribers will retain the same full set of models and features.

The move follows Google's launch of Gemini 4 Argon, through which the company aims to compete with the latest AI models, including GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5, as it continues expanding Gemini's presence across its various apps and platforms.

The new restrictions are scheduled to take effect on October 9, with the models and features available to users varying according to their subscription plan.Β
