Ashghal begins Stormwater Drainage Tunnel Construction

Ashghal, the Public Works Authority, has announced the initiation of construction for a stormwater drainage tunnel as part of the Critical Asset Resilience Programme (CARP) aimed at safeguarding essential infrastructure within the Flood Prevention Scheme - Phase 3 in Doha South.

Eng. Khalid Saif Al Khayareen, Manager of the Drainage Networks Projects Department at Ashghal, elucidated that the project is integral to the Authority's commitment to shielding communities and critical assets from the adverse effects of rainwater accumulation in key areas of Doha South. Notable among these areas are the intersection of Mohammed bin Thani Street and Ahmed bin Ali Street, the Hamad Hospital tunnel, and adjacent zones housing vital governmental facilities such as the Ministry of Interior, the Shura Council, and the Fire Station Museum. Aligning with sustainable development goals and the Qatar National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change, the project presents a sustainable solution to mitigate rainwater accumulation, obviating the need for temporary measures like seasonal pumps. Al Khayareen emphasized that these efforts will not only bolster road safety but also fortify the protection of both public and private assets.

The scope of the project encompasses the construction of a stormwater drainage tunnel spanning approximately 1.7 kilometers with a diameter of 1,400 millimeters. Excavation activities will be undertaken at depths ranging from 7 to 10 meters below ground level employing a tunnel boring machine, thus minimizing disruptions to traffic flow and mitigating inconveniences for residents and institutions in the vicinity.

Anticipated completion of the stormwater drainage tunnel construction is slated for the fourth quarter of 2024.
