Ashghal completes road safety measures in 674 school areas across Qatar

Qatar’s Public Works Authority Ashghal has completed traffic safety measures around schools across the country ahead of the new academic year, strengthening efforts to provide students with safer and more sustainable infrastructure.

The initiative focuses on improving road safety around school zones and creating a secure environment for students, parents and school staff.

Safety Measures Completed Around Schools

Ashghal has implemented traffic safety improvements around 674 schools across Qatar as part of its preparations for the new academic year.

The measures are designed to improve traffic flow, protect pedestrians and reduce risks during busy student arrival and dismissal periods.

The authority continues to coordinate with families, schools and other government entities to support a safe start to the academic year.

School Zone Traffic Safety Programme

Eng. Abdulla Al Maraghi, Road Safety Engineer at Ashghal's Roads Operation and Maintenance Department, said school road safety remains a major priority for the authority.

The School Zone Traffic Safety Programme, launched in 2013, has assessed and upgraded school areas in line with international road safety standards.

Ashghal said the programme now covers 675 schools, with improvements carried out in their surrounding areas.

Speed Limits and Traffic-Calming Measures

One of the key measures introduced around school zones is a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h.

Ashghal has also installed speed humps to slow traffic and renewed:

Road markings
Pedestrian crossings
Red road surfacing
Warning features for cyclists
These measures are intended to alert drivers and other road users when approaching school areas.

Improved Access for Students

Infrastructure upgrades also include wider sidewalks and protective barriers to improve pedestrian safety.

Dedicated ramps have been installed to provide safer and easier access for students with disabilities, supporting a more inclusive educational environment.

Drivers Urged to Follow Safety Rules

Ashghal has called on all motorists to exercise extra caution around schools.

Drivers are urged to follow designated speed limits and reduce their speed when approaching school zones, particularly during student arrival and dismissal times.

The authority stressed that safe infrastructure must be supported by responsible behaviour from road users.

Cyclists Given Safety Guidance

Cyclists have also been reminded to follow safety rules around school areas.

They are advised to:

Park only in designated areas
Give priority to pedestrians
Stop completely at pedestrian crossings
Maintain a safe distance from students and school staff
