DOHA: Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed more than 65% of a major programme to upgrade safety and security systems at Rumailah Hospital, with all work expected to finish during the first quarter of 2027.

The project, being delivered in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health, is intended to modernise life-safety infrastructure, improve the operational readiness of hospital facilities and extend the useful life of the buildings. Medical services will continue without interruption while the work is carried out.

Fire protection and emergency systems

The programme covers the replacement and modernisation of fire-detection and alarm systems, firefighting and suppression equipment, emergency lighting, and exit signs. Architectural improvements include new fire-rated walls and doors, along with upgrades to escape staircases.

Ashghal said the work is being implemented in line with the requirements of Qatar’s General Directorate of Civil Defence and recognised international practices in fire prevention and life safety. The upgrades are expected to create a safer environment for patients, visitors, and medical and administrative employees.

Structural studies and rehabilitation

Project Manager Engineer Ahmed Al Obaidli said comprehensive assessments are also being conducted to determine the structural condition of Rumailah Hospital’s buildings. Laboratory tests and detailed engineering studies will guide strengthening and rehabilitation work wherever required.

These measures are designed to improve safety and sustainability while increasing the operational lifespan of the hospital complex.

Local materials and digital coordination

Around 62% of the materials used in the project are manufactured in Qatar. They include fire-rated doors, construction and finishing materials, wall systems, and components used for external works. Ashghal said the approach supports the domestic economy and increases local content across public projects.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is being used during both the design and construction phases to coordinate engineering disciplines and improve project management. According to Ashghal, digital coordination has reduced Requests for Information by 80%, helping teams improve accuracy and resolve potential design issues earlier.

Once complete, the project is expected to provide Rumailah Hospital with more resilient safety systems, stronger emergency preparedness and a more sustainable operating environment.
