Damascus, October 27, 2026 : Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport has announced that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has lifted a safety warning issued in 2013 concerning civil aviation within the Damascus Flight Information Region (FIR).
The authority said the decision, communicated through an official notification to ICAO member states, represents a positive step toward restoring international air traffic and commercial aviation activity in Syrian airspace, in line with internationally recognised safety and security standards.
Head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority Omar Al Hosari said the authority is continuing to coordinate with ICAO, civil aviation regulators and other international stakeholders to strengthen confidence in Syria’s aviation sector and prepare for the resumption of overflights and commercial flights into and out of the country.
The decision follows recent technical assessments and reviews of the Damascus Flight Information Region. ICAO has also reaffirmed its commitment to providing technical assistance to support the recovery of Syria’s civil aviation sector.
The planned support includes upgrading air navigation systems, rehabilitating meteorological infrastructure and international airports, and training Syrian technical personnel in accordance with the organisation’s international standards and protocols.
