Berlin, November 03, 2026 : German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for artificial intelligence (AI) development to be guided by human values, stressing that human dignity must remain central to technology policies.
Speaking at the 2026 Digital Summit, held under the theme “Shaping AI: Safe, Sovereign, Competitive,” Merz emphasized the need to strengthen digital sovereignty in Germany and Europe.
He called for greater support for developing AI models suited to industrial applications and increased investment in future research to reduce reliance on technologies from abroad.
Merz also highlighted the importance of international cooperation, particularly with France and Canada, in exchanging expertise and diversifying supply chains. He noted that AI offers significant economic opportunities for the industrial and electronics sectors.
At the same time, the Chancellor cautioned against excessive reliance on AI systems without adequate oversight. He stressed that establishing clear rules for digital transformation and ensuring technology serves freedom and human dignity are shared responsibilities involving policymakers, business leaders and society as a whole.
