Arab League and UN Discuss Efforts to Address Regional Crises

New York, September 21, 2026 : Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed coordination on regional and international issues and efforts to address ongoing regional crises during a meeting on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to a statement by the Arab League, the escalating tensions across the region featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides stressed that containing the escalation requires sustained international action to address its underlying causes rather than focusing solely on its consequences.

Fahmy highlighted the impact of the regional tensions on security and stability in the Arab world, as well as on international shipping, energy security, and global trade. He reaffirmed the Arab League’s support for member states in safeguarding their security and sovereignty and protecting vital infrastructure.

He also stressed that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea is an established principle under international law that must be respected under all circumstances.

The discussions also covered developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and what the Arab League described as escalating Israeli violations in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem.

Fahmy called for Israel to comply with international law and international humanitarian law, and stressed that broader international recognition of the State of Palestine should be accompanied by concrete steps toward ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also reaffirmed that Gaza is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory and rejected any arrangements that would separate the Strip from the West Bank.

The two sides further exchanged views on developments in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Libya, as well as the deteriorating situation in Sudan.

Regarding Sudan, they renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors to facilitate the delivery of aid, alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people, and prevent further deterioration of the crisis.
