UAE Expats Can Travel to Montenegro Visa-Free Under Certain Conditions

DUBAI: Montenegro has become an increasingly attractive European destination for UAE-based travellers, but expatriates should check the visa rules based on their nationality before booking a trip.

According to Montenegro’s official government website, UAE citizens can enter, transit through and stay in Montenegro for up to 90 days without a visa, provided they hold a valid travel document.

For UAE expatriates, however, holding a UAE residence permit alone does not automatically provide the same 90-day visa-free access. Montenegro’s official guidance states that UAE residents whose nationality requires a visa for Montenegro can apply through the Montenegrin Embassy in Abu Dhabi or VFS Global application centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

There are also separate arrangements for some foreign nationals. For example, holders of valid residence permits from the Schengen area, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland and several other countries may enter Montenegro for up to 30 days, subject to the applicable conditions.

Montenegro generally defines a short stay as up to 90 days within a 180-day period, whether the stay is based on a short-stay visa or a visa exemption.

What UAE travellers should know

Before travelling, UAE residents should check:

•    Passport nationality: Visa requirements are determined primarily by the traveller’s nationality.
•    UAE residence status: A UAE residence permit does not by itself guarantee 90-day visa-free entry.
•    Passport validity: Montenegro requires a valid foreign travel document, with specific validity requirements applying.
•    Length of stay: Where the visa-free regime permits a 90-day stay, the general rule is up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
•    Visa applications: Eligible UAE-based applicants who need a visa can submit applications through Montenegro’s Embassy in Abu Dhabi or designated VFS Global centres in the UAE.
