U.S. approves potential $4.5bn aerial refuelling aircraft sale to Qatar

DOHA, Qatar: The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $4.5 billion sale of up to four KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelling aircraft and related military equipment to Qatar, in a move aimed at strengthening the Qatar Emiri Air Force’s aerial refuelling capabilities and operational reach.

The proposed deal was announced by the U.S. Department of State on Thursday.

Qatar to Receive Up to Four KC-46A Aircraft

The potential sale includes up to four KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelling aircraft, designed to allow Qatar’s combat aircraft to remain airborne for longer periods and operate across greater distances.

The agreement would provide the Qatar Emiri Air Force with a dedicated aerial refuelling capability, enhancing its ability to support air operations and respond to current and future security challenges.

Deal Includes Eight Pratt & Whitney Engines

The package includes eight Pratt & Whitney PW4062 turbofan engines.

Four engines would be installed on the four aircraft, while the remaining four would be retained as spare engines to support maintenance and operational requirements.

Advanced Defence Systems Included

The proposed package also includes a range of advanced defensive and support systems.

Among the equipment are:

10 AN/ALR-69A radar warning receivers
15 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies for the aircraft’s Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure (LAIRCM) systems
Eight LAIRCM system processor replacements
Missile-warning sensors
Identification Friend or Foe systems
Navigation equipment
Spare parts and related equipment

The agreement would also cover training, training equipment, technical documentation, long-term logistics and programme support.

Strengthening Qatar-US Defence Cooperation

The U.S. State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen Qatar’s ability to address current and future threats while improving interoperability with U.S. and allied forces.

The deal is also expected to reinforce Qatar’s strategic role in regional security and deepen defence cooperation between the two countries.

Qatar has been designated a Major Non-NATO Ally of the United States since 2022, reflecting the close strategic and defence relationship between Doha and Washington.

Al Udeid Air Base Remains Key to Regional Operations

Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, one of the largest U.S. military installations in the Middle East.

The base is home to the Combined Air Operations Center, which coordinates air operations across the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Its location makes Qatar an important partner in regional defence and security operations.

Major US Defence Contractors Involved

Several major American defence and aerospace companies are expected to serve as principal contractors under the proposed agreement.

These include Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, RTX Corporation and Northrop Grumman.

The U.S. State Department said implementation of the proposed sale would not require the deployment of additional U.S. government or contractor personnel to Qatar.

The proposed transaction remains subject to the applicable U.S. arms sales process and represents a significant potential expansion of Qatar’s military aviation capabilities.
