Singapore Introduces Fines for Disruptive Behavior on Public Buses

Singapore, September 21, 2026 : Singapore will introduce fines of up to SGD 500 for disruptive behavior on public buses starting September 23, including placing feet on seats, playing audio at excessive volume, and littering.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the new regulations will apply to public buses as well as bus interchanges and terminals, with the aim of promoting a safer, more respectful, and comfortable environment for commuters.

More serious violations, including obstructing or endangering passengers at bus interchanges or terminals, or causing damage or soiling to public transport facilities, can carry fines of up to SGD 5,000.

Authorized personnel, including ticket inspectors and staff working at bus interchanges, will be able to issue Administrative Notifications of Offenses to individuals suspected of violating the regulations. The LTA will subsequently conduct investigations into reported offenses.

Bus drivers will not be authorized to issue the notices, allowing them to remain focused on the safe operation of their services. However, drivers may instruct passengers to stop disruptive behavior or ask them to leave the bus if they fail to comply.

The LTA said enforcement would be carried out with discretion and fairness, particularly when dealing with commuters whose behavior may be linked to physical or mental health conditions.
