Qatar's Regulations on Working Overtime

In line with Article 73 of Qatar's Labour Law, the standard working hours are capped at forty-eight (48) hours weekly and eight (8) hours daily, applicable throughout the year, except during Ramadan.

During Ramadan, the maximum working hours are reduced to thirty-six (36) per week and six (6) hours per day.

Overtime Work According to Qatar's Labour Law

Any hours worked beyond the regular schedule constitute overtime, as outlined in Article 74. Workers can be required to work additional hours, but daily working hours must not exceed ten (10) hours, unless necessary to prevent significant loss or danger.

In the event of overtime, the Employer shall pay the Employee for the additional working hours at the rate of not less than the basic wage plus any additional amount agreed with the Employee, or provide the Employee compensatory time off, as provided for under the terms of their employment.

Payment for Extra Work Hours

Employees who work overtime are entitled to additional compensation. When actual working hours exceed the regular working hours stated above, the additional time shall be considered as overtime and the employee is paid for those hours at the same rate as he is paid for regular hours plus an additional rate of at least twenty-five percent for overtime.

For instance, if a worker's regular pay is QR 20 per hour, the overtime rate should be QR 25 per hour (QR 20 x 125/100).

Compensation for Night Shifts

Workers who work overtime during the night receive higher compensation than standard rates. According to Qatar's Labour Law, those working between 9 PM and 6 AM should be paid 100% of their wage with an extra compensation of at least 50% of the normal hourly wage.

This provision does not apply to workers on shift schedules.

Compensation for Rest Day Work

If a worker is required to work on a rest day, they are entitled to compensation. This compensation includes either a day off in lieu or payment equivalent to 150% of their wage, including the basic wage plus an additional amount.

Other Info to Note

Here are some general working hours laws you need to know:

  • Work hours should include one hour of break for anything you want to do, be it rest, eat or pray.
  • Workers cannot be forced to work for more than a period of 5 hours continuously.
  • The time spent commuting is not considered as a part of your working hours.
  • Unless you're working on a shift schedule, it is illegal to make an employee work for two successive Fridays (which are considered rest days).
  • Maximum weekly working hours and overtime hours do NOT apply to employees who are in managerial and supervisory positions.

Qatar's Labour Law provides comprehensive guidelines regarding overtime work, ensuring fair compensation and protection for workers.

By adhering to these regulations, employers can foster a positive work environment while upholding the rights of their employees.

It is essential for both employers and employees to be aware of their rights and responsibilities outlined in the law to maintain a harmonious and productive workplace.
