A groundbreaking research endeavor conducted by scientists from Qatar University's Young Scientists Centre (QUYSC) has revealed the pivotal role of multidisciplinary chemistry informal research programs in cultivating research capabilities and attitudes among budding scientists.

The study accentuates the effectiveness of an innovative research-based learning model that employs chemistry-centric research projects to enhance high school students’ research proficiency and attitudes.

According to an article in the QU Research Magazine, the chemistry-based research projects were conducted as part of an informal program in real-world laboratories, involving 330 high school students. These projects integrated various branches of chemistry, such as physical, organic, inorganic, electrochemistry, and biochemistry, alongside other science and engineering disciplines.

The program demonstrated notable success in fostering students’ research self-efficacy and refining their research competencies across multidisciplinary scientific domains. Further research endeavors aim to assess the long-term impact of these multidisciplinary research experiences on students' attitudes toward higher education and careers in research, potentially contributing to the development of a knowledge-based economy.

Conducted by QUYSC under the "I am a Researcher" program, this initiative aimed to cultivate research-based knowledge among national students through advanced research experiences under the mentorship of research experts and scientists. The findings, published in the Journal of Chemical Education by the American Chemical Society, shed light on the transformative influence of such programs in shaping the future landscape of scientific research.

The study underscores the harmonization of chemistry subjects with numerous science and engineering disciplines, offering extensive research opportunities in various multidisciplinary domains. Data collection utilized a mixed-method approach, involving indirect assessment of program effectiveness and surveys administered to students, research assistants, and faculty mentors.

Titled "The Role of Multidisciplinary Chemistry Informal Research Programs in Building Research Competencies and Attitudes," the study aimed to explore the benefits and outcomes of informal research experiences in chemistry. By examining the perspectives of participating students and analyzing their research competencies and attitudes, the research team gained valuable insights into the efficacy of multidisciplinary approaches in nurturing scientific talent.

Through meticulously designed research programs, students were exposed to diverse interdisciplinary research projects integrating principles from various science and engineering branches, particularly within chemistry sub-disciplines. These projects encouraged participants to explore innovative methodologies, foster collaboration across disciplines, and employ critical thinking to tackle intricate scientific challenges.

The implications of this research extend to educational institutions, policymakers, and organizations dedicated to promoting scientific research. It underscores the significance of fostering multidisciplinary collaborations, providing informal research opportunities, and cultivating research competencies and attitudes among young scientists. This study serves as a clarion call for the scientific community to further invest in multidisciplinary chemistry informal research programs and establish an ecosystem conducive to nurturing the scientific potential of aspiring researchers.

Prof. Noora al-Thani, the principal investigator of the study, emphasized the significance of the research, stating: "This program offers invaluable opportunities for aspiring scientists to engage in hands-on research experiences and develop the requisite skills and mindset for a successful scientific career."
