Qatar confirms no direct US–Iran talks in Doha despite conflicting claims

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar has clarified that no direct, high‑level negotiations between the United States and Iran are currently taking place in Doha, despite recent contradictory public statements from both Washington and Tehran.

The announcement followed remarks made on Truth Social by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that American and Iranian representatives would meet in Doha. Iran’s Foreign Ministry quickly denied that such talks were scheduled, fueling speculation about the state of ongoing diplomacy.

During the ministry’s weekly briefing on Tuesday, spokesperson Majed Al Ansari confirmed that while Qatar continues to play a mediating role, no bilateral meetings between Washington and Tehran are underway. “There is no high‑level meeting currently scheduled between the US and Iran,” Al Ansari stated.

He explained that US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, senior adviser and son‑in‑law to President Trump, are expected in Doha for consultations with Qatari officials. These meetings, he emphasized, are part of Qatar’s broader mediation efforts and do not constitute direct negotiations between the two rival states.

Al Ansari reiterated that Qatar’s role remains focused on facilitating indirect communication and maintaining channels of dialogue, rather than hosting face‑to‑face talks. The clarification underscores Doha’s position as a neutral mediator, balancing its diplomatic responsibilities while managing expectations amid heightened regional tensions.

The statement comes at a time when speculation about US–Iran diplomacy has intensified, particularly in relation to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional stability. Qatar’s intervention highlights the complexities of Middle East diplomacy, where indirect engagement often serves as the foundation for progress in sensitive negotiations.
