QRCS Supports 2,000 Cataract Surgeries in Niger Under Anti-Blindness Campaign

Anti-Blindness Campaign

The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a major ophthalmology and anti-blindness campaign in Niger, aimed at expanding access to specialised eye care for vulnerable communities across the country.

The initiative will provide thousands of patients with medical examinations and consultations while funding 2,000 cataract surgeries in several regions of Niger.

12,000 Patients to Receive Eye Examinations

Under the project, approximately 12,000 patients suffering from eye conditions are expected to receive medical examinations, consultations and specialised ophthalmology services.

In addition, 2,000 cataract operations will be carried out to help restore sight and reduce preventable blindness among patients who may otherwise struggle to access treatment.

The campaign will cover four areas of Niger:

•    Niamey
•    Diffa
•    Tillabéri
•    Zinder

The programme is designed to prioritise vulnerable populations and improve access to essential eye-health services.

Partnership With Niger’s National Eye Health Programme

The project is being implemented by Niger’s National Eye Health Programme (PNSO).

It is being carried out through a partnership involving the QRCS representation office in Niger and Direct Aid – Niger, with joint funding from QRCS and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

The partnership combines humanitarian support, local medical expertise and international funding to expand eye-care services in communities where access to specialised treatment can be limited.

Part of International Fight Against Avoidable Blindness

The initiative forms part of the Alliance to Fight Avoidable Blindness (AFAB), an international public-health programme led by the Islamic Development Bank in cooperation with participating countries and partner organisations.

AFAB focuses on the treatment and prevention of cataract-related and other avoidable forms of blindness in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through campaigns involving screenings, medical consultations and surgical treatment, the programme aims to provide people with access to care that can significantly improve their vision and quality of life.

Cataract Surgery Can Transform Lives

Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, gradually reducing vision. When left untreated, advanced cataracts can severely affect a person’s ability to work, study, travel independently and perform everyday activities.

Surgery is the principal treatment for advanced cataracts and can restore useful vision for many patients.

For low-income and vulnerable communities, however, the cost of treatment and limited access to specialist medical facilities can create major barriers to receiving surgery.

Humanitarian campaigns such as the QRCS-supported programme seek to bridge that gap by bringing specialised services closer to patients.

Qatar’s Continuing Humanitarian Health Support

QRCS regularly implements healthcare, emergency relief and development initiatives internationally in cooperation with local organisations and humanitarian partners.

The Niger eye-care campaign reflects a broader focus on programmes that provide sustainable medical assistance while addressing conditions that can have a long-term impact on individuals, families and communities.

By combining 12,000 eye consultations with 2,000 cataract surgeries, the latest project is expected to provide both early diagnosis and direct medical intervention for thousands of people.
